Grief

Grief
Grief is always with me now,
my constant company
it seems.

She sleeps with me at night,
wrapping me in her arms,
waking me often
to let me know
that she’s still there.

At times she moves within,
lodging in my heart,
my solar plexus,
my lower gut,
clenching, wrenching,
wringing me out.

Sometimes she stands beside me,
a gentle arm across my shoulders,
gesture of compassion.

Other times I wear her as a mantle,
her load heavy and burdensome,
shrinking me down to a smaller me.

I feel her in my face,
her fingers pulling on my skin--
she and her friend depression,
bursting wide my reservoir
of tears.

At times she fades--
I think, “Oh, good,
she’s gone.”
But she returns
in answer to my secret fear
that I’ll forget.

Somehow I need her now
to help me in this time
of loss.

Oh, my dear heart,
I miss you so...

About the author

Jill Ebsworth is a member of our poetry circle Cat Charissage hosts monthly. She is a refined wordsmith and writes beautiful poems. Her beauty also shines through her artwork and her cheerful personality. She also reads her poetry at our open mic events at the Owl Acoustic Lounge and during COVID on our Zoom open mic events.
Like many of us, Jill has suffered in life, and  finds that the arts and poetry are some of the only things deep enough to face the mystery and express it.  She was away from poetry for many many years, but has come back to writing in the past three or four years.  I hope she never abandons it again.  She wrote this blessing for our Poetry Circle and we are so grateful for it.

During grief you will go from feeling numb, to feeling devastated, sad, angry and a whole lot more. It is all normal. Don't hold back, feel your feelings! Grief is hard on anyone but even harder for people without support. Make sure to reach out to people. Don't isolate.

The Christmas Lights

14/12/2020

Picture of lights on trees

How shiny, how twinkling,
how delightful, how cheerful.
Let the lights bring you hope
and peace this Christmas.
You know, one little light
doesn’t seem to be very bright
but put a string of them together
and they light up and shine.
Just like one Christmas light
is connected to another
and another, and another,
so are we people connected to each other.
We are connected with your loved ones
even if we don’t see them this Christmas.
We are connected by the invisible thread
of love, friendship and our humanity.
When you look at the Christmas lights this year,
don’t be sad and don’t feel lonely.
Remember that just like the lights,
we are connected by the thread of love.

The pain and the blessings of one day

24/3/2020

I was feeling sorry for my self yesterday. I received ten of my newly published poetry books I ordered from Amazon and my first reaction was happiness but soon I started to cry. I planned to have a book release party and now I can barely get out of the house because of COVID 19. I want to protect my partner Neil and my self from the virus and take social distancing seriously. As I recognized the loss of my ability to have a book release party I also recognized that I can’t sell the physical products I make.

Why I like Brene Brown So Much

24/2/2020

I am reading the fourth Brene Brown book and I enjoy every minute of it. Those of you who know my poetry could see that Brene writes books with wholeheartedness as much as I write my poems with wholeheartedness. I remember times people crapped on me for being an “open book”, as they called it and I worked hard to be a closed book to please them and the people who don’t like the “open book’ types. I can say that watching Brene Brown videos and reading her books made me happy with who I am. I also learned from her to share my stories only with people who deserve to hear them. That is so important. When I started to put things on the internet ions ago I made it my rule to share things I would share with everyone and anyone. Those are my public stories to share. The messy, private ones get shared with the few people who I can trust with the messy stories and I know I can rely on their non-judgemental support. But let’s get back to Brene Brown and why I like listening to her and read her books.
