How it all started
A long time ago and far, far away there was a little girl who liked dancing in her cute frilly skirts and everyone around her thought she was cute, especially her neighbor, Uncle John. Later she made a pretend stage for her muppet show using a cardboard box someone threw away. She used pieces of fabrics that fell off transport trucks to sew her muppets. She enjoyed entertaining her little friends and neighbours, Uncle Joe and Auntie Elisabeth. They loved her shows and she was happy to entertain them.
In school she liked music, languages, literature and the soft sciences. She sang in 3 award winning choirs between age 10 and 20. At age 16 she conducted the choir when her choir director was sick. She fell in love with poetry and entered poetry competitions. She won a few awards in reciting. Music in her culture was a part of every day life and people sang at most gatherings. She has been in plays since a very young age and was a school radio reporter. |
As you may have guessed that little girl was me. The far away place is Hungary, a country in Central Europe, with a rich history and culture. That is where I was born and raised.
Canada
I have lived in Canada since 1988 and had the wonderful opportunity to live in Hungary for nearly 10 months in 2003 and 2004. I wrote poetry at the time and have taken still photos. My poems were popular and I received many invitations to read them to the public. One day the director of a cultural center for minors called me and said they would like me to come and talk about Canada.
I agreed and prepared a presentation based on information about Canada, and had taken some of my photos of the breath taking Vancouver Island, where I lived before. Every time I advanced from one picture to another I heard a wow from the audience. Then another wow and another and another. You get the picture. Something happened to me during that time and it is hard to put words to the transformation that took place inside me. I found a new purpose in life. I wanted to show people the beautiful places I have seen in Canada. I wanted to share the rich culture I have seen since I was a small child in Hungary. |
Video...the way to go
Coming back to Canada in 2004 I realized that the best way of doing what I wanted to do was by the use of video. Not only is video visual and engaging, it can use all the rest of the media we use in communication. And to top it all off you can add music. Music, that speaks to the heart on
a very deep level. I have bought my first computer capable of video editing, bought cameras and the rest of the equipment necessary to create videos. I joined a coop for videographers, taken workshops, collaborated with fellow videographers. Made documentaries of bears, artists, documented theater plays, conferences, dance performances, music videos in 4 languages, posted about 60 YouTube videos and made an educational DVD about crystal meth. Video is my favorite media because it is so versatile and engaging. However I do enjoy still photography and writing as well.
