To My Ancestresses by Mary Siever

Introduction:

This is a poem I wrote sometime ago when contemplating on the fact that we have to often search for women’s histories more deeply than men’s:

To My Ancestresses

Who are you?
Why did you weep or hide in the shadows,
Ashamed to show weakness or strain?
Why do I read the words of your husbands,
your fathers, your brothers, but not yours?

Why were you silent?
Your stories call to my spirit, to my heart.
I seek to know you;
who you were;
what sorrows and joys were yours.
You will not be forgotten;
your life had value,
has value for me.

These women’s stories hidden from view as though they were of no worth and yet now we know. The women and their stories are priceless.

About the Author

Mary Siever is one of my heroins.

She is the mother of six amazing children. She is attending university and is doing all this with a sane mind.

She wrote her thesis in 2020.

She is a great example of the power of women and what women can achieve.

Mary Siever is married to Kim Siever since 1995 and they have 6 children ages 22 yrs to 5.5 yrs. The four youngest still live at home. She enjoys running, singing, and reading. With a BA in English and Women and Gender Studies, she finds inspiration for writing poetry or other creative work through literature and the stories of those who have challenged the patriarchy. Currently, she is completing a MA through the University of Lethbridge and hopes to continue related research in the future.

Mary, such a sensitive and thoughtful call to women to wonder about and remember their history and worth - a most meaningful poem. Kudos.
