This photo includes so many of the beauty and magical elements of Vancouver Island: the ocean, a sailboat, the forests, and a snow capped mountain.

The East side of Vancouver Island is busy during the herring spawn every spring. Male release their milt, (sperm) to fertilize the eggs the female lay. When the milt is released it colors the ocean a bright aquamarine. Patches of the discolored water can be seen from higher ground and from the air. The area is hustling with sea lions, eagles gulls and other water fowl feeding on the herring and their eggs. The eggs are attached to rocks, seaweed and eel grass. The milt is foamy along the shore from the constant movement of the waves. I have taken this picture when the waves created a long undulating line of foam along the water's edge.
Saskatoon Lake near Grande Prairie is a charming little lake with a provincial park and bird sanctuary. There are many birds at and around the lake. It is a favorite place for bird watchers. With blue sky and calm waters it is a photographer's sanctuary too.
The Oldman River bank turns into winter wonderland when the trees are covered in snow. They don't stay white very long. It is a treat to see them like this. It is quiet and serene there. Only the geese, coyotes and a few people walking. It is a great getaway and yet it's close to the city.
You can travel thousands of miles for many years and every once in a while you find a place that captures your attention and the scenery, the ambiance, the memory of it stays with you for a long time. The land, the water and the people of this place will live with you. It is a small, charming town on the east side of Vancouver Island, where the trees stay green all year and grow tall. The rhythm of life is regulated by nature and it is essential to pay attention.
Winter is not winter without snow and cold. Well we are blessed here in Lethbridge with both. The minuses were flying high, I mean low. It was -22 with sunshine, the trees were bright, and covered in snow. The river bank was a true winter wonderland. Days like this make photography and hiking exciting.
